Comments: This project involved some impressive floorchaeology, which unfortunately we didn't capture good pictures of... but this shows a part of it. The back of the family room is on a concrete slab, probably originally a rear patio/porch that was enclosed in the 1965 remodel. This slab was not quite as high as the floor. To adjust for this, they put 2.5" of grout/tileset material over it, then tiled it.
After that, they put linoleum down on the whole floor. Sometime later, tired of the linoleum, they put red and green plaid carpet over it (apparently even in the kitchen). That didn't last, though; after that, someone put in ship's-plank style hardwood. Under that, probably to level it, they laid down new plywood subfloor.
How do we know all this? You guessed it... they did not remove ANY of the previous material. The rear floor was a total of about 5" of grout/tileset/whatever, then tile, then linoleum, then carpet, then plywood, then wood. And the threshold from the kitchen to the dining room and office was about 1.5" high.
We stripped out *everything*, including the tile and grout.
